This is a story about the return of medicine. The film is set two lifetimes from now, in Canada’s Northwest Territories, in a world turned to ice and where the suns have twinned. The Dene have survived the Wheetago - a race of human-eating supernatural beings of lore whose name translates as “body eater”. They have been summoned from beneath the tar sands by humanity’s greed. The young protagonist, Dove (pronouns they/them/theirs), has the extraordinary gift of shifting genders. This makes them a protector of both earth and water - a rare and sacred gift. Dove saves a frog from torture and, in return, the frog offers Dove their medicine. But medicine comes at a price. And Dove discovers they possess their own. Wheetago War taps into magical, visually compelling landscapes while addressing pressing sociopolitical, economic and environmental problems faced by industrial Western society. It is a film that helps bring us back to the moral compass of Indigenous oral storytelling. Traditional oral stories of the Wheetago, Wendigo and Winago have existed across indigenous cultures to teach us about greed. Currently, Indigenous leaders and communities are protesting pipeline expansions. What will be the impacts of construction on wildlife habitats? What of the catastrophic effects of oil spills? And what of climate change? Those that consume the earth with greed will have to fight those that protect the earth.
