It’s too laid back to be nihilistic but it shares DNA with nihilism. This is only my 5th Fujita movie, and 2 I’ve seen are the Lady Snowblood which seem to exist in a different sphere from the rest. That said, this movie about young lovers who constantly move from apartment to apartment fits very much in the mold of the other 2. I genuinely enjoy the vibes but can’t easily put it into words. Maybe it’s like mumblecore without the introspection and more soft core sex and fights? I want to see more of his movies to get a broader view of where he’s coming from. I’d be surprised if I don’t find one of these that I absolutely love.

Mainstream love story from a Studio that began in mid 70's experimenting outside the Roman Porno formula. Fujita is excellent but most of the film is so uneventful that you expect something will happen towards the end: an eerie ending that closes a story that started with a beautiful opening. Full circle!
P.S. It also features Kirin Kiki and Yuri Yamashina in small roles.

I have this on DVD as I got really into Fujita's films right before streaming hit in Japan so they were difficult to find at the time. They are still somewhat obscure (though the Japanese wikipedia page for the film is quite long and detailed). I came across this on cable TV this morning about 20 minutes into the film and couldn't pull myself way from it. This was one of the trilogy of films he made staring Kumiko Akiyoshi with titles/inspirations from hit folk songs -- Akachochin (Red Paper Lantern) and Imoto (Younger Sister) also by Kaguyahime and Virgin Blues by Akiyuki Nosaka I like Fujita's guerrilla filmmaking, working class settings, the pop culture references (posters of Alain Delon and Charles…

La perra vida, nunca sale para donde piensas que va a ir.
Fully on tune with Fujita's vibe on this one. Its all over the place, its crazed, funny and weird as well and as usual with his youth films it ends on a left field note tying everything together on a weird but satisfying way.
