IRVINE, Calif. – The Gaels galloped over the Anteaters in the second half of Monday's match, coming back from a 1-0 deficit at the half to win 3-1 and improving to 4-2 on the season.
FLOOD GATES OPENED
After a couple of near misses for the Saint Mary's attack in the 48th and 58th minute, they broke through in the 65th on Tyler Hardin's first goal of the season to even the game at 1-1.
Gaels midfielder Valentin Kurz moved the ball up to Omar Yehya, who then worked his way to the right of the goal. He passed to middle just in front of the six-yard area where Hardin pounced on it with a right foot. There was contact down the field between Hardin and the UC Irvine defender, but no call was made either way.
Less than eight minutes later the Gaels took the lead for good. Bastian Toelhoej passed ahead to Gaige Gibbs and he blasted a pass up ahead to Jack Vestberg. The Stockholm native juked out a defender even before he had the ball and then took him off of it while the defender was off balance.
Vestberg raced towards the goal with the ball and from the corner of the six-yard box put a left-footed shot in the left side of the net for a 2-1 Gaels lead in the 72nd minute. The goal was his third of the season, matching his total from last year.
Saint Mary's next goal was just five minutes later. After an SMC corner piece was deflected near the goal, it was headed in by Louis Sterobo on the ensuing cross for his first goal and a 3-1 lead in the 77th minute.
SURVIVED THE STORM
UC Irvine struck first on a long ball all the way down field from 80 yards away, keeper Kash Oladapo came out to get it, but the Anteaters forward popped it over Oladapo's head out of midair with a right foot, a split second before the Gaels goalkeeper could.
The defender who made the long pass had a lot of time to work with, and Oladapo hesitated for just a moment, catching him in between an initial move back before charging forward just two minutes into the match.
It would have 2-0 in the first five minutes had Oladapo not made a great save on the next shot on goal, keeping the Anteaters from controlling the scoreboard and momentum.

The Gaels remain on the road for a trip to Cal Poly on Saturday, September 17 for a 7:00 p.m. kick off.
